Shotokan is a style of Japanese karate that was developed by Gichin Funakoshi in the early 20th century. The name Shotokan was derived from two words: “Shoto” meaning “pine waves” (a reference to Funakoshi’s pen name), and “kan” meaning “house” or “place”.
Shotokan karate emphasizes strong, linear movements and powerful strikes, with a focus on maintaining proper form and technique. Training in Shotokan usually involves a combination of kihon (basic techniques), kata (forms), and kumite (sparring).
In addition to its physical aspects, Shotokan karate also places a strong emphasis on discipline, respect, and self-improvement. Practitioners of Shotokan karate are encouraged to develop a strong sense of character and to strive for constant self-improvement both on and off the mat.
